With Reader’s Theatre now becoming more popular and more important, should we start thinking about what types of props to start accumulating? I would love to have some bins of props but I don’t know what to get. There are so many flea markets around here where I could build up a lot of of stuff, but what stuff? I could use a list of suggested “things” to have. What does everybody else have?
as per Jason, some top props are:
1. wigs/hats
2.giant sunglasses
3. plastic food
4. noisemakers
5. stuffed animals
6. cardboard to make sets
7. spray bottles of water
8. inflatable anything
Jason also really stresses the instant creation of stage sets out of cardboard. If, during Reader’s Theatre, it occurs to you as you are directing the scene that you need a boat, the two or three artistic kids (the “set crew”) whose job it is to do that sort of thing can have a boat built from cardboard in a few minutes.
All we have to do is go down to Home Depot and grab some of the ubiquitous cardboard that lines their shelves and seems to be lying around all over the place and those sheets are large enough to build stage sets. Get some scissors and tape and that is all that is necessary!

I might add here that now that since the big thread about reading is winding down, I will be posting a lot on Reader’s Theatre. So look for those coming up in April. Hopefully we can share ideas on how that is working and get a leg up on next year on RT.
