I really feel for those high school English, and middle school language arts, teachers that have to grade so many papers. I feel for their families. Depression, migraines, irritability, aches and pains, all symptoms of teacher overload.
And the thing that has completely blown my mind over my entire career, having allowed myself to be worked like a mule early on as well, is how most students don’t care or want in the least the feedback that the teachers works so hard to provide. Why don’t they see that and just take are of themselves? The days in a school building alone can crush one’s heart, let alone bringing school home every night. I am so glad that Tina is only working half time every other day now, so she can bring her “A” game to people without having to go in everyday.
What’s really sad is that I just found out from a teacher that came to my seminar in Chicago that she can’t make it to the Chicagoland TCI meeting because she has to work homecoming at her school that day.
So a teacher wants to improve her practice but is required by her school to work a dance/football game that literally serves no purpose other than being tradition. I don’t even remember Homecoming at my high school.
Maybe if we started treating teachers as professionals and not babysitters our schools would improve.
True dat.
