From Bob Patrick:
Hey guys,
It’s a sign that I am on spring break that I have time to Twitter, but I decided that each day I would put out little Tweets about C. I follow and am followed by a lot of Latin teachers, and I want to try and put some seeds in their imaginations. I’ve been doing it now for several days. One was tagged by another Latin teacher as a favorite tweet two days ago. This morning, however, a Latin teacher challenged me when I said that grammar was only good for one thing: editing. He responded that “knowing explicit grammar helps me appreciate art, think about language, evaluate words …”
And then in a follow up tweet he added that it “helped me learn some Hungarian and make assumptions about new word forms … ”
I find this fascinating. Clearly a four percenter. Clearly a smart guy. Clearly doesn’t understand the difference in editing and actually being in the language. I pointed out to him that all that he is describing are examples of editing lanaugage, not being in the language. (except for how in the world grammar helps one appreciate art–that’s beyond me).
So, if you are on Twitter, follow me. I am there as BobPatrick
