  1. I agree! And what a nice email, too. I wonder if the rest of the students had as much comprehension as he did–or if the teacher was just going on and on “submerging” the students in 95% target language? He was concentrating only on himself and his understanding which, of course, makes sense–but it really makes me think, once again, about the HOW of staying in the target language that amount of time. It makes me think students are not terribly aware of how or whether teachers check or do NOT check for student comprehension.

  2. If that is the case, the rest our colleagues who are faux CI better re-think their approach. I wonder if they worry about their kids being prepared but you raise a good point. Anyway, good for my guy.

  3. …students are not terribly aware of how or whether teachers check or do NOT check for student comprehension….

Students are rarely made, in schools, to do any metacognition at all. I was noticing today how I had to cue a first day French 1 class over and over to let me know when they didn’t understand.

Carol said that this kid was a high achiever. So he got most of what he heard because chill used the TL in class to train him. I would bet that most of the class, those four percenters who as verb mechanics in high school didn’t hear much language, were sitting in pools of sweat during that class.

This is a little discussed fact. Our kids can go to college and understand even those profs who spout on and on in the target language. The other kids can’t. They sit there and sweat. And the teacher knows that. And submerges them anyway. It’s a game – college freshman have to sweat, and college professors have to be wonderful and also complain about the crap they are getting from the secondary level. It’s just a big game and it’s getting really old.

  4. Right on. I have such high hopes for Bob Patrick. I know it’s only one class in one college, but… Then there are the Europeans, Mark Knowles, and Carol Gaab leading the charge to beef up our presence at ACTFL. Maybe the change will come from the bottom up and the game can change.

  5. I heard an amazing piece this week while driving…you can find it at http://www.onbeing.org/ It’s entitled “The Wisdom of Tenderness”…really amazing piece, and interview with Jean Vanier, a humble, beautiful human being. Anyway….at the end of the interview he is asked if he thinks that his programs, named L’Arche, could change the world and he says (I’m paraphrasing) “it is not my job to change the world, that is God’s job. I believe in creating small lights of love. If one light lights another, the lights of love keep expanding. Who know how much of the world can be lit? But it must start small, with each of us.” I believe it in Carol, I really do.

    with love,
    Laurie
