This is a lovely report from the field! Thanks, Katherine. How is your Thai comic book idea going?
Dear Diane
Oh thank you! Yes I have taken a rest from it – but your comments I’ve just seen now are a shot in the arm for me. Thank you
I asked an online community of expat women about 2 possible premises for the story – and they were split on whether they liked them. they also didn’t like that it was a male hero. (But you know men are more resistant to reading a book with a female lead character than women – and I’m fond of my hero Mr Orange, who is a funny little scientist blokey.) The premises I suggested were were…
a) A shy scientist who’s never had a proper girlfriend comes to Bangkok and becomes a TV relationships doctor and falls for the girl next door.
b) A sceptical scientist comes to Bangkok to do paranormal research and falls in love with a Thai ghost
c) A tea scientist comes to Bangkok to open a chain of foretunetelling tea cafes
Some women didn’t like the ghost idea because they thought it wouldn’t practise useful vocab. They said they wanted stories about ordinary themes – eg getting bitten by mosquitoes or meeting an older Thai lady that invites them to learn Thai cooking for a couple months or something funny happening at Tesco Lotus, or getting trapped up Big buddha mountain at night….
So I’ve been in a hiatus… I will mull it over.
Thanks again for your ideas and support – they are awesome.
