It’s balancing act of sorts. I teach gifted students from all over the district. Students who have always been in gifted programs, some come from rich families, some come from poor families, and of those last two groups, some come from a local elementary. The only common thread is parents being invested in their child’s education/grades. I try my best to include students to feel successful in my class because it is a common value.
This week, I saw a student smile for the first time. It never matters what stories involve or who we interview. This student just watches with a frown. As I look at our #2 freewrite of the semester, I notice that this student has written over 100 words with transitions, in the past tense and all that MAGIC that traditional teacher crave –including accuracy. So, during my prep, I typed it up and we read it together as a class. All of the other students were WOWed. I told my class that all the positives that traditional teachers look for. Spelling, grammar, etc… Then everyone started to applaud. That is when I saw this student smile for the first time. If I continue to think about it, I could cry but I gotta head out and take care of biz.
Thank you Steven for sharing! I am about to go to the sunny climes of LA with Elena and I’m standing in airport security here in drippy grey PDX applauding with your class! Just got out of conferences and here’s a vid I made today.

Dude. Get out the hankies.
Seriously. I recognize the expression. Live is forcing them to grow too fast for these kiddos. I let this kids just chill and listen to a story. When output happens, it’s off the charts!
