God Bless Mr. Rogers and may he rest in peace.
If only our society had listened to his message more closely, but we still have the same problems, only worsened.
It’s up to us now. We have to say/think/sing:
“It’s such a good feeling
To know you’re alive.
It’s such a happy feeling;
You’re growing inside.
And when you wake up ready to say:
I think I’ll make a snappy new day.
It’s such a good feeling,
A very good feeling.
The feeling you know, that I’ll be back
When the day is new.
And I’ll have more ideas for you.
And you’ll have things you’ll want to talk about.
I will too.”
Thank you Jen for putting Fred’s daily parting words to the kids in that comment field. I wonder why we are all getting so insane about this work all the time. Look at us, look at what we talk about, and then look at those words, that message, the way it is delivered, focused into the lens of the camera, talking about them, slowly, lovingly. There is a lot of Fred Rogers in Blaine Ray, by the way. We are so far from doing that right now. We are making it so complicated. When will we just simplify things? After another 25 years? I say we start doing it now with lots of Story Listening. Beniko told me today her book will be officially finished this weekend. We will have it before she leaves to go back to Japan.
Beniko and I made our first presentation yesterday. It felt like we went in and dusted the cobwebs off of all those poor grownup children. Yes people it’s ok. Language and stories and the human mind really are that powerful. You can just relax now people. You can simply relax and find things you want to talk about.
I wonder if Beniko had not done the substantive research if we would be even talking about it. Too simple? Teaching is simple? Maybe then life is the same? Wow, that would be a trip! I want my money back.
What sweet man was he!
If we can all just channel our inner Fred Rogers, which means working hard every day on behalf of children in spite of all challenges and obstacles, speaking slowly so that they can understand, and talking about the kinds of things that they experience, all will be well. He didn’t ask them lots of questions, he told them stories. They could just sit and watch. Maybe that is something we should look at a little closer. He also didn’t give them tests.
Tina please tell Beniko about him before she leaves Portland. Show her some YouTube clips of him. She may not know about him and yet he reflects her research to perfection.
