I need to share this. I used One Word Image with the artist and the steps Ben Slavic shared with us when he came to Portland a few weeks ago. There was another group that I didn’t use the One Word Image with.
What a difference. The group with OWI was engaged and it was amazing. They loved the picture – the name – and even asked me if “Donald the Broccoli” could be one of their classmates. The other group couldn’t engage – they were distant- not buying in, even though I tried the Personalized Questions and Answers, etc.
I am in Heaven. The Classroom Rules really work! I made the big mistake of getting rid of Rule #8: Nothing on Desks. (I have a student who needs to write during class to deal with anxiety.) But all the others worked – they are clear and I point out – smile and repeat and I am in charge again.
