  1. Our Chicagoland TCI/ TPRS group will meet sometime at the end of August or the beginning of Sept. Jill Busscher who teaches at St. Hilary on the north side of Chicago will be hosting. I’ll be sure to post here when we know the exact day.

  2. Jill just set the date for Saturday, August 23. She’ll be hosting this meeting at her current school, St. Hilary, on the North Side of Chicago. Some coaching, sharing of info learned at conferences this summer, and other group-directed activities will be on the agenda.

Please come! I’m a little concerned that we’ll lose all of the Chinese teachers in the Chicago area that have been attending over the past year. They might know that Diane N, the innovative one, moved to Denver and thus feel like they won’t get so much out of it. I hope that’s not the case.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want more details!

  3. We had a wonderful TCI Chicagoland gathering today at Jill Busscher’s school where she teaches Spanish to K- 8 students, roving from classroom to classroom with her cart of goodies. She must have boundless energy!

Others in attendance where Jorge who presented at NTPRS this year and now teaches at Young Women’s Leadership Charter School, Suzy Pesa from Winnetka who also presented at NTPRS this year, Yiyi who has been attending our meetings from the beginning and teaches Chinese in Wilmette, Pamela who has taken over Diane N.’s Chinese job at a Lake Forest independent school and is super active in networking and collaborating with Chinese teachers on an international level (she has a secret passcode to access the Facebook page for TPRS Chinese teachers, just to keep the community safe there), Elaine who teaches at Wolcott School, a school for students with disabilities (she retired recently from a North Shore district but found TPRS and loved it so much that she came out of retirement and teaches at a school where she doesn’t have to deal with inter-departamental politics), Teri who teaches French at Taft HS in CPS where Sabrina left a year ago, and Lynda who also teaches French at a CPS school, Steinmetz (both of them are struggling through having to work under the IB framework. For instance, they talked about having to submit “authentic texts” that they are using to assess their students’ acquisition. These “authentic texts” can be abridged but they can not be rewritten. This means they have to make their French 2 students read newspaper articles from Le Monde or some absolute bullshit!)

I especially look forward to traveling on this TCI journey with Jorge and Elaine as we all teach high school Spanish and are in close proximity to each other.

We missed Ray Bauer because his car broke down and he had to work on it today. And, there’s Scott Green that just couldn’t make it today. Something tells me I’ll be putting back a tall one with them again soon.

There it is folks. The establishment is getting a shake down around here in Chicago!

Our next meeting will happen Nov 8 (most likely) at Jorge’s Young Women’s Leadership Charter School.

  4. Jill Busscher continues to take the lead in organizing our quarterly TCI Chicagoland group meetings. Our next meeting is Sat, Nov 22, at the Wolcott School, located at 524 N Wolcott Ave, Chicago, IL 60622, hosted by the veteran of veterans, Elaine Winer; the lovely lady who tired of the interdepartmental fight at Deerfield HS, retired, and found a school, the Wolcott School, where she can teach 100% CI.

Jill’s email invitation for his Nov 22 meeting follows:

    Greetings to everyone,

    We have good news!

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, November 22, from 10a-2p.

We’ll be meeting at Wolcott School located at 524 N Wolcott Ave, Chicago, IL 60622. ?The school is ?one block east of Damen and one block north of Grand at the corner of Wolcott and Race. There is usually plenty of street parking.

Enter on Wolcott to be buzzed in.

    Bring your own lunch.
Elaine, our host, has graciously offered to provide coffee, tea, water and dessert.

If you have any questions or comments, let me know.
Hope to see many of you there.

    Take care,
