  1. I did a card talk-tableau demo this week for the Social Studies teachers, a group of 10 or so adults in their late 20s to early 50s, some who speak Spanish at home, all who were in traditional language classes as kids, none were native speakers of French, the language I was doing the demo in. My supervisor was there too, since she is also the SS supervisor. They were all super impressed with how much language they could understand and how much fun they had. Ben, you ask “How can one shift one’s thinking after teaching a number of years in one way, to researching, embracing and adapting a new paradigm in a few short years?” I think teachers need to get a chance to be students and feel the difference between the old way and the new way.

I agree and that is why it’s been the main presentational content for the past 20 years at the conferences. Still, once teachers have had that “ahah!”moment, they still need support in their classrooms when they go to implement CI themselves. That is why I contend that the best training cannot be national but must be local or, failing that, regional. St. Louis is doing great in that respect under the leadership of Jeff Tamaroff. Chicago of course we know about with Sean and Alisa and those heavy hitters. It is moving to regional support slowly. People who succeed have support. Without Susan Gross doing lots of trainings back in 2000-2010 I would have given up. Even if one other person in a building is testing CI, it makes it worthwhile bc then you have something real to talk about at those horrible department meetings. Those doing CI alone in their buildings must always remember that they are doing something almost impossible, and so not give up. Then be careful about whom you hire. It’s that time of year already! There is a post somewhere here about what to look for in a CI candidate. It’s by Bryce.
