1 thought on “Mixed Classes”
I have some students who say they don’t speak Spanish, but understand everything much faster and respond quicker to questions. My school’s 66% latino, and so the latinos are all over the map on their abilities, some noticeably fluent, some with lots of input, but shy about producing (incidentally, Krashen has a good article on language shyness which sheds some light) but some hide out in my classes so they don’t have to take the Heritage speaker track. Some of them are very quiet while some can borderline monopolize, causing me to go faster. This is definitely a challenge that is seldom addressed well in schools. At least at my school, it’s a matter of the counselors having nowhere else to put students, or at least that’s what I’m told.
