Use songs and rhymes to reinforce meaning and practice language. Choose authentic songs, games, stories, and rhymes in reference to translations whenever possible.
I agree with the first sentence. Songs rock. Rhymes rock. Stories rock. Games? Uh, not sure on that one. I think that when we do games the kids have fun, but do they hear interesting and meaningful CI and is the language being learned? Usually not. All games usually do for the kids and the teacher is get them through the class period. If it’s not full-on CI, it is just not valuable.
What does it mean “in reference to translations”? I thought they said earlier we can’t translate. Hmmm.
The entire point here is that when songs, games etc. are not connected to CI, to the overall ocean of language as we offer it in stories, they really have very little value in terms of acquisition. Maybe the kid can go to France and sing Sur Le Pont d’Avignon, but that’s not what I call CI and real language acquisition. I call that fluff.
