Thoughts on Language Teaching – 3

Language education reform is happening NOW and teachers who are not aware of the research are looking increasingly silly with each passing day as they bow down at the altar of the status quo.

Lots of language teachers are now starting to finally unite and inform their too-often oblivious district supervisors that they are doing it all wrong and that big changes are really needed not just at the building level but also at the district level and indeed at the national level.

Why language teachers would make their work so much more complicated than is necessary is beyond me. We have the research that tells us that human beings learn languages when they understand the message while the unconscious mind runs the entire process. No focus on structure is needed.

Oh well, as the French say, “chacun son goût” – to each her own. But really, folks, isn’t it about time we learn how to relax in our jobs? Maybe just a bit? Isn’t it time to let the deeper mind do all the heavy listing so we can just enjoy our days with our students? The deeper (unconscious) mind is exactly where language acquisition happens in the first place.
