  1. Mike explained that we should use the show as a vehicle for input. The goal was not to explain or simplify dialogue, but rather to get students to understand my input at natural speed. My colleagues seen to think the point is to find ways to explain dialogue. Mike stopped the film very often and did not just explain what was going on but also talked about scenery and the clothes and everything. Stopping the film maybe every 5-20 seconds.

And of course some of the ruder kids complain that they don’t want to be interrupted, to which we respond no and then throw them a bone before and/or after by playing it all the way through. Is that right?

    1. Well I don’t do that because this is a prolonged show that we watch the whole year. But yes with a short video we do that. What I liked about Mike’s take on it was that he looks for the characters’ motivations in each scene.

      1. and I am sure we can do this NT style because once we get a vehicle for input we take it until the ride is about to loose gas or interest. Then we take another.

This is an excellent description of what we do in NT instruction. The next vehicle is always gassed up and ready. But the driver must trust that the process of changing cars/activities is a good one, better than their lesson plan. The entire Natural Approach to the Year book is based entirely on what you said, Steven.

          1. Sold! I’m trying to beef up my Dept. with CI friendly folks. And I’m going to pitch your materials for purchase.
