“… they still were invited to use their creativity when I asked them to make predictions.”
When describing the invisbles this week, I told students, “Guess ____’s age.” Or ” Guess _____’s super power.” This simple command brought on more interaction in the TL than simply telling the students.
I am thinking that we CI teachers focus on a lot on “go-to” activities and strategies to be comprehensible but we are developing our engagement/interaction/communication strategies. At least that is where I am now.
That is a very good place to be Steven. I think about the point you make above a lot. It’s the future of this work. The second paragraph above is where it’s at for me. BUT to have that kind of freedom we need a system, a structure, a pattern, a weave in the cloth, a process, railroad tracks, and that is what the Invisibles SYSTEM has done for me and Tina. Susie famously said twenty years ago, “Just talk to the kids.” Too vague. I say, ” Just talk to them but follow a proven system when you do.” That way you won’t get lost and fumble around and hate your job. Follow a system, any system that works. We’ve known each other a long time, and I bet that you would agree that it feels odd to say it, but I need structure.
I think that there are people who are great at “Just talking to the kids.” That said, there is a lot of value for having a system as a base to allow students to feel comfortable, to have sanity in an ever-demanding career and well people such as me who need structure as well.
I feel that as we internalize deeply out routines/techniques (until it’s in our bodies) and understand our systems (Krashen framework, invisibles etc…) we also begin to polish, adapt, and control our dynamics in class. We meet our students class by class. To me it is non-linear. It’s like discussing parts of the body when really everything is connected and each part relies on each other.
Huge point Steven – I say now that it’s not about just talking to the kids at all. it’s about talking to the kids using a system. For me that system is non-targeted CI. That’s what floats my boat in the CI seas with no danger of capsizing.
