Esther,
I eliminated the rule “nothing on desks” by, from Day 1, having all the students leave all their belongings on tables at the sides of the room (credit idea to Dr. Louisa Walker). Two years ago, I also eliminated desks in favor of chairs (credit again Louisa and Mike Peto). No desks and all belongings at the sides of the room has proven to be a wonderful transformation. I have had zero complaints about either one, mainly because, as you say, I am in charge.
