I know exactly what you are talking about! One of my colleagues confronted me about a situation like this. This person told their class that they were going to be teaching Latin IV the next year, instead of me. Apparently the class freaked out and one typically quiet student spontaneously shouted “what the f***!” This teacher actually had the audacity to confront me for making her look bad because kids liked my class so much better.
The work you do is NOT wasted. Those kids are having wonderful experiences with you. Your quality teaching has made those kids acutely aware that grammar teaching is unacceptable, if the goal is language acquisition. I really hope that your colleague either slowly comes around or steps down from her role as department chair.
