I got this question about the quick quizzes:
Hi Ben,
After stories I know that you do the quick comprehension quizzes in order to record a grade. If a student is absent do you somehow have them make up the quiz? It seems like that would be hard since they would miss the story. Or do you just make an absence a non-grade?
My response is that if the kid skipped class/did not show you an excused absence, give them the zero. This has nothing to do with education and everything to do with preventing absenteeism, which is a problem in our district. It’s a pain to keep up with, but if you don’t do that then the child reads into your behavior that skipping class is no big deal in your class.
On the other hand, if the absence is excused, of course it becomes a non-grade.
