Someone not in the PLC has asked me this question. I don’t know how to begin to anwer it:
Hi Ben,
I’m really enjoying your book so far – it’s been amazingly helpful in organizing my class for TPRS style learning.
I’m teaching an ESL class to newcomer middle schoolers who are in mainstream classes the rest of the day. My students (who are so new that they are still struggling with question words and negation) have the most trouble with Social Studies. I just found out their next unit is the colonization of Africa.
I hardly expect to be able to express nuances of colonialism to 12 year olds in a brand-new language, but I was thinking I might be able to impart some content-related information to them via TPR & TPRS that would give them stronger background going into Social Studies. For instance, each student could role play a country and we could go from there. Similarly, we could practice the basic scientific method through a story about a crazy experiment.
I was wondering if you knew of anyone who has written about integrating lessons from content classes with TPRS? Have you heard of that being done before?
Thanks!
Megan
