Excellent article. Sad, very sad. We have to stand up to this. If we are not vocal, then there is not hope.
Agreed – all this charter stuff is being embraced by my district much too fast. Most of their changes seem to aim toward making it harder to put up with being a teacher. If they keep it up, I’m going to be returning to California much sooner than I thought.
The President of Bard University, Leon Botstein, puts it simply:
“The American high school is obsolete.”
Unfortunately, the bleak future that this article predicts, is already happening in many districts: Oakland, CA, where 40% of kids attend private/charter. I don’t think you’ll find things to be better in CA, Dan. From what Bob has told me, GA is doing much better. And all the pressure (and blame) gets put on teachers. It’s very sad.
