If we are teaching using a vPQA slide presentation we may come to a slide of an angry girl. We just park there. We don’t leave it. There are posters (Director’s Cut, Sabrina’s Greetings) to support our instruction of the emotions and so we can laser point from the angry girl to the emotions on our posters and just ask questions. Is the girl irritated? Is she grumpy? Is she happy? Why is she angry? She is angry because she has to go to Canada, class! Where did that come from? I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. I went with what came into my mind, and, importantly, stayed in bounds with terms from previous classes so the kids always knew what I was saying. Ask or tell the new information. Trust the randomness of what you are saying. The laser pointer guides the eyes of the students to the emotions. It’s not random, anymore than language is random. Learn to go with the unexpected. As long as you stay in bounds and go slowly, things will be all right. Enjoy not knowing what you are going to say, where the discussion is going.
