This is one of the most beautiful letters one could ever hope to get. Reading it was a real gift this morning.
This sister’s love for her brother and the love for what the teacher has done for the brother, and the whole family. It is making me just tear up to think how powerful the work of a teacher is, how much good we can do, and how much bad we can do. It is why we get online at all hours of the weekend and summer and drag ourselves halfway round the world in metal tubes just to stand and think in the same room together. It is why we get all “them’s fighting words” about our teaching, why we engage in these passionate mental slugfests, because we all, all of us, every last one, even the ones who never type and just scroll along with all their hearts, we ALL are here because we know that this work, in whatever shape it takes in our lives, this work touches kids on another level. This profession, this work, this group, this letter, it is all a light in the storm. So happy to be here.
Wow. Just wow.
Keep this letter close as a salve whenever you need it, and share it with teachers who doubt their contribution.
How awesome that you are ‘ending’ you formal classroom career (I refuse to believe it…) with this expression of gratitude.
The universe really lined up on this one.
