Get-to-Know La Clase
This is some of the contextualized, interesting Spanish that we are doing “on the side” the first few days of class.  We are spending about 10-15 minutes a day getting to know one another.  The objective is to build respect, community and trust so that students can relax enough to learn deeply and well.  These are some actual questions and comments from the first few days of Spanish I class.
Beginning language learners do not need to produce the language—they need to understand it.  We check to see if students understand by asking lots of personalized questions.  Students answer these questions with one word answers; simple stuff like names, places, numbers or cognates, and sometimes with short, common, predictable Spanish words.  All of the language is contextual.  There are no vocabulary words floating around with no connection to other words.  We focus on meaning, and right now that means we focus on learning about the students in this class.  We are using Spanish for a purpose here—to get to know one another a bit better.
