    Hi and welcome Kevin!

I am curious as to where you teach. I live in the north suburbs of Chicago (Northbrook) and teach French in Chicago, at Taft High School. Unfortunately, I don’t know of too many teachers using TPRS in this area. Last year New Trier sent all of its Foreign Language teachers to a TPRS workshop but I am not sure if they are using it in the classroom.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need anything or need some encouragement.
The first year can be intimidating, especially if you are the only one teaching this way in the school ( like me) , but if you have a supportive community and teachers nearby that can help you, it makes a big difference. You’ll see that everyone on the blog is so helpful.
If you want to contact me off the blog , you can do so at: ssebbanjanczak@yahoo.com

    Good Luck!

  2. I teach in the northern suburbs of Chicago too! TPRS is not common among this area’s Chinese teachers, based on those I’ve met, but a number in Wisconsin teach that way. I don’t know of any other roughly local TPRS-style teachers (of any language) except another Chinese teacher in Chicago.

  3. Kevin,

Welcome! I’m one of the Latinists here on the blog too and am excited that you have found this place. This blog and community of friends and coaches has completely changed my classroom and approach to teaching over the past year – and I and my students are more joyful for it. So glad you’re here!

  4. Salve,

I am a Latin teacher as well (along with Spanish) and am trying to work as much TPRS and CI as I can into my curriculum as well. I am in my first year doing all this after 13 years teaching traditionally. So far so good, with many thanks to the insightful posts here, on bestpractices, and from Ben and John Piazza personally.

hopefully we can continue the conversation and keep learning from one another,

    Vale,

    Dave

  5. Kevin,
Glad to see you found your way here. Read as much of this site as you can, but know that you will hit overload at some point. That’s okay. Take what you can, and enjoy. I’ll be doing some of the writing you asked me about soon and sending it to you and putting it on Latin Best Practices, too. You’ve really got a trifecta going now: good support on LBP, Chicago TPRS teachers who are reaching out, and this wonderful Professional Learning Community to coach and encourage you. HUGE!

  6. All,
Thanks for the warm welcome and encouragement. I look forward to diving right in this week as classes begin. There is something extremely reassuring about an environment such as this where one can feel comfortable sharing not only successes in class, but also difficulties (and failures) in the classroom. Here’s to the new year! Cheers.

  7. Welcome, welcome, welcome!!! This is truly a group of friends and family. So glad that you are now a part of it!! All of you!! (I’m losing track of whom I’ve welcomed!!)

    with love,
    Laurie
