New job proposal: “The Reteller.”
I tried this out with my adults tonight with success. I gave my most advanced student the job. Every time she was called on she had to retell the story FROM THE BEGINNING and as fast as possible! This is where having a student artist working on a board at the back of the room, really helped, and I’m sure made the artist feel more appreciated, because we’d all turn around and look during the retelling. In 25 minutes, she probably did 5 retells.
I can’t keep up with you dude. This is mega.
Since this year is only my second year as a TPRS teacher, I just implemented the role of Artist as well as Timer in September. I have to say that I personally really like these jobs. However, the Artist draws on the easel-not an an Ipad. This helps retells as Eric mentioned.
I wasn’t sure if the timer was going to be a nuisance but I like this as well! I have a student in each class designated as the official timer. The first few classes were a little difficult because the student wasn’t sure exactly when to turn it on and off. It’s become much easier now. S/he knows that it should be running as long as we are SPEAKING in the target language. This also works great for me because I can see how much of the 84 minutes we spend communicating in the target language. I have a chart on the whiteboard with all the classes I teach this year. At the end of the period, the student timer adds the minutes spent in the target language that class to the previous classes. At the end of the month, the class with the most amount of minutes gets some type of reward. I brought in donuts for my class that won in September. All the students are very serious about the time spent in the target language as they really want to beat the other classes. When I signal the timer to stop the clock, I can kind of read the looks on the faces of the students that they really just want to keep the timer going. This is great because they really don’t want to hear English at all!!!
Eric, I really like the “reteller” job. I was just wondering…do you call on other students to retell the story as well or is this only for this advanced student?
Thanks!
So far, it’s a job for only one student during “step 2.” But I reassign jobs every class. But this job will only be for those top kids. When we finish “step 2” I could ask for retells from other students.
