  1. Hey Ben

I am feeling thick but could you explain how the first gesture is related to “to have”? I NEVER know what to do for “to have” but feel like I would need to explain why that one “means” to have.

    thanks

  2. Yeah skip there is something about pulling your fist into your gut, straight back, as it sits on top of open left hand, that signifies that you ain’t letting it go, that you have it.

One thing, I heard a teacher on the writing team talking about how she is going to study ASL over the summer. I have tried that, and advise against it. I did it for two years. It gives them another language to learn, in a way, and one we don’t know. How can we learn another language in a few months and then teach two at the same time? Didn’t work for me.

Plus, when each class has its own sign for stop or targeted structures, etc., they mean more to the kids in that particular group. Not to say some ASL can’t be used in gesturing. Simplicity is the key, and the class ownership* piece. That’s just my opinion, though.

*When a child has suggested and you have accepted a cute little sign for rabbit and you react with amazement that the child could be so creative and “Yes, thank you Jeff, that is exactly what we’ll use for rabbit in our story today and how perfect your gesture is!” and then every time the word rabbit occurs in the story you look at Jeff with that knowing smile of approval that’s just between you and Jeff, you have more in the class than if you get rabbit from the ASL site online.
