BLM – 3

Our bosses profess to want REFORM in education. We all looked to CI. That was the right place to look. But to our shame we largely ignored the equity/inclusion side of things. Maybe it’s because George Floyd hadn’t yet been murdered. CI alone is not enough to solve the problem of language education. We lacked focus on the equity piece. No blame.

But now that we are starting to see things properly, if we look at both CI and the Black Lives Matter movement, light will rain down on us professionally.

In future posts, then, let’s take a good look at how and why we can begin to really enjoy our jobs as language teachers, and at the same time enjoy all of our students as human beings.

My recommendation, however, is that if you think that kids who have brown or black skin are less capable of acquiring your language, then please leave this website and don’t come back. I’m happy to refund the price of your monthly cup of coffee. If you feel any seething anger in my message here as we begin our focus on BLM in 2021, and if you are not willing to take a good long look in the mirror about how you approach language teaching, then “see ya later!”
