  1. I tell them they can’t go in the first and last ten minutes of class. Then I let up to two kids go during the middle 30 min. of class as long as they slip out and back in in a timely and quiet manner. I never allowed them to ask and interrupt the flow of the class. Most classes honored this approach. Sometimes the same kid would leave at the same time every day to wander the halls for ten or fifteen minutes. That’s a phone call home. The class would object, since they were losing one of their trips, in case it was necessary. I always told them that research says that only 1.4 kids need to go during the middle 30 minutes of class, on average, so two is fair. I’m sure that’s not true, but it seemed to work for me.

  2. At my school we have 3 minute passing periods to go from class to class. I let students go whenever as long as they do my silent signal to me. I signal back and they go. When they come back, I have a classroom “rewinder” and that student signals right back to me to “recycle” the story right back. I still go slow because the student needs it but this time the class gets the story again.
