  1. I would omit the “only” just because in the article it also mentions that assessments can be authentic if they extend beyond the class… Here is where I think that training ( for lack of better word) students to communicate via single word answers, tracking the talker, sitting up, making eye contact and listening becomes a major part of our authentic assessment (see jGR). In other words, students are being graded for being there in the moment and becoming part of the learning, creative process, active while we teacher assess.

These skills go beyond the class. How can they function if they are not paying attention when they are out of our classrooms?

    1. Is it terrible of me to say that I am so proud of you, Steve? That’s not meant to sound patronizing, and I hope you don’t take it that way.

But you seem to have read a dizzying amount of text, followed every word, and even drawn conclusions that most veteran teachers never figure out…all in the span of like 72 hours.

Teachers like you, Steven, and everyone who is trying to pick up this burden and carry it with your students…you are so amazingly open-minded and have enormous hearts make me proud to be a teacher. Proud to count myself amongst this amazing group of educators.

Thanks Claire. I’m proud of your guidance as a major resource of literature. Especially, since you hold keys that are unique to the ESL arena.

I am just here to grow. Reading is truly fun but practicing it in the classroom is the result of sharing, experimenting, failing, reflecting, tweaking etc… This creative process is fun especially when we talk about it on this PLC.

So true. How many dates have I been on where the guy just didn’t know how to listen? Communication is a life skill that will follow them forever.

Why multiple-choice them to death when we can send the message that they will be heard (through Authentic Assessment), but most reciprocate and really listen (also through Authentic Assessment-jGR).
