  1. College administrators are just as bad, if not worse. They would see us force output from day one.

I only get my students for 10 weeks at the college level. They acquire a considerable amount because of TPRS/CI, but they are still thousands of hours away from high-level proficiency. Asking a beginner to have the basics “mastered” in 10 weeks is folly when so much depends on the natural order of acquisition.

I am jealous of all the high school teachers that get to see the gains in their students after 1, 2, or 3 years of TPRS. I often don’t see huge gains in my students because they get so little time, and that discourages me.

Ben, I watched one of your videos of today and saw one of your students do a stunning retell of a story based on the art work. When I saw it I couldn’t help but smile. This is our objective: natural fluency that comes when the student is ready to produce.

  2. Sick ’em Robert! I love your response, especially the evil fantasy! I like this demo of why we encourage, not require complete sentences.

If Kate doesn’t want to work in a hostile or deceptive environment, then she has the task of educating the administrator. Send the admin the primer documents, excerpts from the natural order studies, and Krashen’s papers. At my Back-to-School night I gave a 10-15 minute explanation of CI, the learning vs. acquisition distinction, and why grammar and output is not the way to acquisition, and my Principal attended.
