  1. I’ve shown most of the series to my 7th and 8th graders, stopping as we go to rephrase and comment here and there. I think that’s good time spent in English 😉
My kids are gonna know more about TCI theory and practice than the high school teachers they move on to. I also made it clear that Krashen is controversial and while everyone agrees that CI is important there are degrees of agreement. Yet, so much compelling evidence in these videos was presented!

  2. This reminds me of parents/caregivers who teach babies/toddlers to communicate using gestures before they are able to speak. There might be an interesting connection there with using gestures as part of TPRS/CI.

  3. In my view Krashen is controversial in the same way that people who have spent twenty or thirty years doing something one way would not want to know about anything that essentially guts their position. I’m sure those who sold audiocassettes didn’t want to hear about CDs and likewise on into the future. I’m sure that those who sell gasoline automobiles don’t want to hear about the carbon footprint and global warming either. Krashen is controversial to people like that. His hypotheses accurately reflect how people acquire languages – it matters little if they are provable or not. Things that are as complex as how people learn to speak are just not in the domain of the intellect, so how can anything be proven? It’s ants trying to figure out what an elephant looks like. We just know what works. We could ask the ants to uproot trees, but, as we have seen in our profession, they haven’t gotten very far with that. But the elephants move the trees just fine. They are built for that. So is the unconscious mind – the elephant – built for the heavy lifting of bringing fluency. The conscious mind – the ant – can’t do that. It’s beyond what it can do. So in my view Krashen is not controversial at all.
