I got this recently from K, who makes an interesting observation about the value of classes in which vocabulary acquisition is valued over language acquisition:
Hey Mr. Slavic,
Knowing a bunch of words without use won’t help. I have a neighbor who took 5 years of French (including AP) and only knows a bunch of random words . This is a partial list:
dog, hello , thank you, red, house, bike, school, my name is, bye, peanut butter, steak, apple, clothes, sweater, tennis, cat, mom, family.
Words. No sentences.
The lunch group is coming Friday, it should be interesting.

A couple of years ago I had a student who was “teaching himself Japanese” by memorizing long lists of words. When he first started in German he was certain he would very quickly be moved to the upper level because he could memorize words so quickly. At the end of two years of German this student commented to me, “I know a lot more words in Japanese than I do in German, but I can speak German better than Japanese.” (Duh!)
