Word Chunk Team Game Change

This information is for those teachers who have done the Ultimate CI Book 2 training. The instructions on the Word Chunk Team Game have been changed in the book to:

1. Teacher says a single word, a group of words, or even a sentence. Groups of 3 or 4 students put their heads together to translate what they heard, as a group. The teacher can choose from two possible sources of questions here: (1) the just-completed tableau or story (preferred), or (2) word lists (not preferred).

2. When a group has an answer, one person raises their hand. Judge 1, the “Heads Together” judge, checks to see if the group put their heads together before raising their hand. This prevents one student from taking over.

3. The group with their hand up first is pointed to by Judge 2, the “Hands Up First” judge.

4. The group makes their “group sign”. It has to be done in perfect synchronicity. (Before they start playing the first game, they spend a few minutes in their groups making up a team name and a team “sign”, a motion that identifies them. It has to be done in perfect synchronicity if they are to win the right to answer the question.) Judge 3, the “Synchronicity” Judge, verifies that the group sign was synchronized. The groups answer need not be spoken in unison.

5. If the group’s answer is correct, Judge 4, the “Scorer” awards one point.

6. The first group to get 2 points wins the right to throw a nerf ball or wad of paper, etc. into a trash can under the board from behind a line about ten feet away as many times as they can in one minute. One kid rebounds.

7. In a composition book labeled “WCTG”, the scorer keeps a running tab of each group’s point total – how many “baskets” they made – throughout the year, for all five classes.

8. To build competition and interest between the classes, we can add a poster to the wall that keeps track of each team’s points over the course of the year.
