Question About Summative Assessments

Hello Ben!

My name is Dana Schillerstrom. I am currently in my 10th year teaching French, and my FIRST year teaching using the CI method! I attended the IFLT conference in Chattanooga this summer with some colleagues and we were all so excited and inspired. We all purchased a copy of your book and we have lovingly nicknamed it our “bible” for the school year! Thank you for writing such a helpful tool! I have read it through once and constantly find myself going back and re-reading different sections.

I am sure you are very busy, but I do have a question for you concerning assessment. Our school has adopted an assessment policy in which ALL teachers of ALL subjects are required to weight our grade book for the term with a minimum of 80% for summative assessments and a maximum of 20% for formative assessments.

As the year has gone on I find the formative assessments easy and they seem to fit well within the scheme of CI. However, I am finding myself struggling when I envision what my summative assessments will look like. I wish I had the freedom to divide my grade book as you suggest with 65% for the interpersonal skills rubric and 35% for quick quizzes. Do you have any suggestions for a TPRS/CI newbie in regards to assessments?

Thank you so much!

Dana
