Sophie is a seventh grade student at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India. Last year as a sixth grader she was a part of that active group of young people who brought the Invisibles into the world. Below is an email I got from her today. She is still into the characters we created together in class.
I have never seen anything grab kids like the invisible characters we made for our stories last year. Sophie is precocious. I might add that when I met with Sophie’s mom at the first parent conferences, I was told that Sophie’s French teacher a few years before at the British School, which is across the street from the American School, uses grammar translation to teach very young kids languages, and that Sophie had “neither the interest nor the capacity to learn a foreign language”. I would have to disagree:
Hi Mr. Slavic, this is Sophie from AES. I’ve been making loads of new characters for French although we haven’t done any stories. We all really miss you. I hope your having a good time. How is the book going?? If anyone else thinks their characters are better than ours I will personally introduce them to my friend Mr. Fist! We all miss you so keep in touch!
The horse crazy Pony!!
P.S. is it ok if I send you a couple characters?
