This, from John Bracey, is telling. It is almost the equivalent of a criminal indictment on grammar teachers. It really burns me up:
I remember having a conversation with some upper level high school students about how they made it this far in Latin. Here are some roughly remembered quotes:
“Before a test, I would spend all night memorizing the English translations of the passages in the chapter.”
“I inherited a photographic memory from my dad.”
“I would wake really early on test days and spend 2 or 3 hours copying all of the grammar endings out of the back of the book until they burned into my brain. Then I would immediately write them all down on the first page of the test.”
“I never did any of the homework. English translations and answers to all of the exercises in the book are easy to find online. I would just cram it the night before and right before class.”
John comments:
It is so depressing to see traditional teachers use these same kids as example of how their methods are effective. Ugh.
