Implicit/Explicit Learning

Michele has a bag of goodies connected to VanPatten that will get us into the holiday spirit. Today’s topic is implicit vs. explicit learning:

Hi Ben:

VanPatten talks about this in the current ACTFL Language Educator. Everyone must read it! As it turns out, ACTFL IS offering the intro as a sample article, so here it is:

Michele continues:

Here’s a much longer article by VanPatten, in which there is a tennis analogy I think you’ll enjoy (toward the end).

And if you copy my search, you’ll see that the search terms “implicit/explicit language instruction” yield a great deal. I might have told you that Betsy’s daughter is doing research in applied linguistics (her field of choice) at U Chicago. Her senior thesis is showing that TPRS is the only method out there that matches the science that today’s linguists are reporting. Betsy is going to offer her up to our Curriculum Director for our next in-service, without mentioning what the findings are that Danika will report!

Here’s the search link:

Have fun reading!

Michele
