Carly Pike has a question that I don’t believe has been addressed here before:
Dear Ben,
I am a brand new teacher, attempting to survive my first year. Things are going as well as any first year could expect to go, however I’ve hit a roadblock. I have just started to teach a combined French 3/French 4 class. The level 3 class is very use to my methods and antics, while the level 4 class is still very suspicious. They had a traditional teacher for much longer before I came in and took over for their French 3. I believe that my current 3s are possibly at the same level as the 4s.
This brings me to my dilemma of what to do with the 2 classes. I’ve recently decided that they will be reading Problèmes au Paradis together, but I’m really uncertain as how to differentiate between the two levels. I feel they are very similar, but I am expected to treat them differently. When I say I’m uncertain about how to proceed, I mean I don’t have a clue in the world. Do you know of any resources that I could read/use that have to do with combined or multi-leveled classes? I’ve been reading the PLC, but everything there already assumes that I’m a well-seasoned teacher. Many of the posts assume that I know things which I don’t. I appreciate any help you have to offer.
Thank you,
Carly
