Winter Survival Guide – 3

Permit me to say this: we make a serious error when we push the CI on a class that has significant elements of resistance in it. We cannot ignore negative vibes coming from us from kids because we are convinced that CI is the best way to teach them. Maybe it isn’t. If they are not receptive to us, if one particular class has enough negative kids in it to tilt the balance of the class atmosphere against us, then we should pay attention to those warning signs.

The psychic resistance to our instruction by certain kids, kids who don’t want us to try something different that requires them to grow and change and become more real, can really hurt us. I won’t put myself in that position any more. Of course, it depends on the class, but if I haven’t had the support of counseling to get rid of certain kids in my class at the semester, and if phone calls haven’t worked, nor directly confronting kids, and if I insisted on foolishly still using too much English in my classroom (a CI killer that has an effect similar to throwing a stick into the wheels of a bicycle) I will then water down my instruction on behalf of my own physical and mental health.
