Grading Question

John

While doing my grades, I felt the need to bump a student’s overall grade up or down, depending on how well I thought my numbers accurately represented how that student was doing in my class.

Trouble is, some of my little angels will  check their numbers to see that they add up. This is a good instinct for their academic survival, but it’s also nitpicking, and they may think they can tell a teacher “You have to give me this grade!” if those numbers don’t add up.

If you give your students a regular grade summary (which I am required to do), how do you make the numbers “come out”? I recall there being some talk on the PLC about naming a grade category “overall” and then just putting in the grade, rather than having it be a mathematical sum.

Any thoughts on the logic and logistics of this would be helpful.
