Nathan Black on Homework

Nathan sent both a link to his thoughts on homework and an update on those thoughts as well. This will help Lori and everyone following the New Tech thread here this weekend.
Then, hopefully, when we identify links to Jim’s ideas, we will be able to put those and all related posts and comments under the New Tech category.
Then, whenever we know of anyone who has to teach CI under New Tech or similar (student output) models, we know where to find the information – under the New Tech category on the right side of this page. Here is what Nathan sent:
Hi Ben,
The link to the homework discussion thread from last year is here: https://benslavic.com/blog/2010/07/27/michele-whaley-5/
Reading through that post a bit, I realize how I’ve retooled it a bit how I do it this year for my own sanity.
When I collect the homework each week, I give everybody an 1/8 sheet to write up details for me (a different color paper for each week so I can quickly tell one week apart from another) but also circulate two clipboards around the class that contain the students’ student numbers (rather than names).  On those clipboards they give me their quiz scores for the week along with a quick summary of their homework.  This way I can get all the grades quickly into the gradebook and then read the reports at my leisure.  If some reports are lacking, I’ll just adjust the automatic “10” I put into the gradebook down to a 9 or an 8.  If the reports are really dynamite, I’ll set that paper aside to share with the class.
Rather than typing up a major report for the beginning of every week, I just pull out the 1/8 sheet write-ups I found most significant from the previous week that I find most compelling. This way I have less work to do, and it also models they level of reflection and reporting I’m looking for from my other classes.
Take care,
Nathan
