A phrase from Susan Gross during NTPRS really stuck with me (and I paraphrase): “During the first years, all linguistic information should be lexical.” It makes so much sense just to treat new forms as new structures. When you define it on the board and circle it, even the most complex grammatical structure/concept is just another structure from our students’ perspective. The 4%ers will begin to recognize the patterns, as they would anyway, and we can acknowledge that with a word or a look, and move on. And we have just saved 96% of our students (and ourselves) a lot of hassle.
