  1. Alisa I will add this to the Primers as a tool for educating admins who think that Can Do’s and the ACTFL Guidelines that address output might be used in their school to evaluate kids. If it comes to no use in the NYC school (remember that is not your responsibility), at least someone here in the group might be able to use it to rein in some admin who thinks that a kid should be able to “do” anything w the language before year 3.
I remember when I was struggling w the writing and speaking testing pieces in Denver Public Schools with my first and second year students. I could just FEEL how unfair it was. For anyone reading this, be clear that it is the agreed upon position of this community, based on the research, that children in the first two years of a language program should NOT BE TESTED for output.

  2. Any new PLC members who aware of the depth and vision that is in the document above re: the dangers of assessing kids on output too early may then appreciate some of the great articles we have collected here over the years on this topic. This is the time of year when admins start with their daft questions about how we assess, so instead of defending yourself by yourself, just go find any rebuttal to any attack you may be experiencing right now in the:
    (1) Primers (hardline above)
    (2) the Administrator/Teacher/Parent Re-education category here.
    (3) the When Attacked category
I’ve selected a few nice articles against too-early output in the Primers:
Angie Dodd – “Speech Output Primer #1”
Nathaniel Hardt – “Teacher Centered/Student Centered” and “Speech Output Primer #2”
Robert Harrell – “Speech Output Primer #3”
    Robert Harrell/Nathaniel Hardt/Eric Herman – “Language-Like Behavior”
    Bryan Whitney/Eric Herman – “Language-Like Behavior”
Ben Slavic – “Things to do beyond the normal CI when the kids get tired of too much input”
