We must face the pain of transition that we are in now.
Yep, I agree. A key to getting there I think is to allow reflection on when we move from our joy of hanging to the dictator of the classroom? How do we notice the slip away from conversing to lecturing and how do we right ourselves in the process back to conversing? Where does it get uncomfortable for us? Where are our fears? How do nurture ourselves to lean in and explore? What outside support do we need to be our better self during the time we are teaching?
Good questions, Kate! I think we often get uncomfortable when we’re in the middle of co-narrating a story and we get stumped. We don’t know what else to say. We might have meta awareness that we don’t want to use too much unfamiliar vocabulary, that we don’t want to say something without visual support, that we don’t want to say something without it being built upon a response a student had. It’s lots to think about in the moment.
There are some simple answers, like to 1) go back and retell the story from the beginning, 2) pause and do a brain break or a quick quiz, 3) write a sentence or two on the board.
Nurturing ourselves involves, at least in part, knowing that all we have to do is follow these strategies, strategies that have been polished off through trial and error by Ben and others, and the easy of conversation will come.
Sean i’ve solved that problem. The Star provides infinite possibility (useful at upper levels) to go anywhere, but the guard rails are firmly on and keep us safe. it’s amazing. truly. You can expand as much as you want and you and students are never lost.
Thank you Ben!!! This makes a lot of sense!!
and……it’s GREAT to be back here!! I “attended” the Agen conference, and saw a lot of people that I had originally met on here, and realized how much I learned here on this PLC, and was able to share and grow. Now that I am facing another “new situation” (remote teaching) I need Ben’s PLC fix again!!! YAY!!!
Well we’re not working too much on how to deal with online instruction here. I’m doing that in a Zoom group.
