What is scary is that traditional teachers, in their self absorption that what they do is the right way to do it, when left alone or with someone at the building level breathing down their neck, either one, they will still do exactly the same things. So this incentive to honor the professionals more is a moot point – they will do the same old thing as long as they can get away with it, no matter who is in charge. If they were a business, they would have failed long ago, with tremendously high client disatisfaction and miserable results in all ways.
Ben, don’t you think that a lot of traditional teachers’ resistance to the change in FL instruction, for example, is based on a fear of being called out for doing something that is potentially not better than what is tried and true in their minds (and I emphasize “in their minds”)? If that decision of how to teach was supported by the admin and there was room for teachers to look at real solutions, might we see more CI instruction than not? When teachers see schools as a type of business, as admin does, won’t they be more thoughtful of the client needs and wishes?
Yes. But we are talking about decades of stagnation. But new people by and large clearly don’t want a bland career. Those new teachers I see are cut from a different cloth. They seem to have less fear, and more art in them. It’ll take time. But the way schools are structured now, with admins being frighteningly in love with power, the change won’t happen until the termites have done their thing completely, down to the last bite into the wood, as per:
