SO TRUE! That sentence is worth a lot to me. It is why I love and cherish this approach and want to share it with literally everyone I can. It is freeing, and it releases not only the kids but also us teachers from the tyranny of what the industrial-education complex has DONE to us. It uncovers us, and exposes us, and it is hard to be exposed and uncovered with a group of students. But the rewards are so great, both in terms of their acquisition of Language X, but also in terms of everyone’s getting to be human in at least one period a day in our crazed school climate. Just hanging out with an adult who is working to be authentic and be WITH people in spite of it all is a great lesson (and a rare one) for the kids.
