  1. Anne Matava’s “He wants to get married” is a great one for this week also. Actually, it is a bit along the lines of Sabrina’s “Le Coureur”. We did it today in my level 2 and it was the most fun we had in a long time.

  2. FYI this has gone great today. The kids seem to love sending strange gifts to the star of the story from other students or from strange people. We were often wonderfully skating on that “almost too far” line. Made for great engagement.

  3. I just had the best class. That Candy Hearts story with James’ change rocked the house. I felt more relaxed with this story. Why? I don’t know. I think it has something to do with knowing that if I don’t relax more then the kids don’t feel free to come up with cute whacked out answers, which is absolutely key to this work.

By the way, the way it reads is “receives a letter” but then in the locations it says “receives three gifts” first so that should be re-ordered or the structure should be “receives a gift”, right?

This story by Jim Tripp is really good and I wish I had called our attention to it earlier. Oh well, next year!

    1. Well my students have already gotten “gift,” so I was thinking “three gifts” sets up the “first, second, third” idea. The concept of a letter being on a gift was new, though, so I figured that would be the focus as far as new structures.

  4. I did this one today too! The variation with the 3 gifts. It was super fun! Two days before the start of vacation and everyone is pretty checked out, but I had 2 groups today who rocked it. The third group was a little too twitchy, but even so, they still hung on! As luck would have it, just as I was starting in the level 2 French, some visitors on a tour walked in to observe. We all said “Bonjour” and then pretty much without missing a beat, proceeded all in French! The class has never been this attentive (at least in my recent memory). There was even some confusion at the beginning about who gave the gift vs who received it, and someone asked that question all in French, completely naturally, like “wait who got it? oh ok.”so it was truly one of the most fluid classes ever!

It has been awhile since I have attempted a story, for a variety of reasons, so this was a perfect way to ease back into it. It probably helped that the third grade was using my classroom to store their costumes for their performance. There were piles of fun stuff everywhere: unicorn masks, a dragon, an eagle, some soldier helmets and swords and lances, a sparkly dress. Since we had to work around that distraction, I just handed out something to everyone, so we had a queen, a princess, random creatures, etc. It had nothing to do with the script, but I think it just made the whole vibe of the class purely fun. Everyone was laughing but not out of control. Such fun!

  5. I started with Anne Matava’s story, “Afraid of the Package”, and did mostly PQA on the three structures:
    receives a package (I changed to “gift/present”)
wants (doesn’t want) to open it
    is afraid of

We talked about presents that people in the class had received, who they received them from, whether they wanted to open them or not, and whether they were afraid. There were some interesting answers, and I had to explain how to decide whether “Freund” means boyfriend or friend who is a boy and “Freundin” means girlfriend or friend who is a girl. We also found out who is afraid of clowns, spiders, snakes, vampires, etc.

  6. I added “attached” to this script (“A letter [is attached to] the gift.) In French it’s a cognate so o.k. to do. Each time the kid opened each gift there was a letter attached to it. Mega circling options there. Where was it attached to the pony, class? etc. The kids got a little rowdy with that question today. Then the next line, “in the letter there was a sentence”, was just great script writing. Fun day. Great script!

  7. Thanks so much for this story! We did Anne’s Afraid of the Package recently, so it was a really easy one for the kids. I messed up the actual story, but the kids were so into having a chance to be the center and recieve a package, that I was given carte blanche for infinite reps with high interest!
