  1. Hi Jon-Eric,
That’s a big task you are taking on, and all of us have been there!
Carol Gaab teaches major league baseball players, and this summer at NTPRS she strongly made the point about connecting with your students’ interests. She did a lesson for her students with the word drop using a funny mary kay youtube video. She paired that with a baseball youtube video where people were dropping the ball (or not) and had them discuss what was really going on (did he drop it or didn’t he?). Susan Gross is a master at this too… I watched her DVDs early on (a great resource). She took an elem/middle school story and leveled it up to hold the interest of her adult language teacher audience. The message from these masters: as long as you have high frequency vocabulary, you can tailor it to your audience.

I’ll be interested in hearing what you figure out. My sister and I are going to try to connect on Skype so she can learn how to talk in Spanish on her banking job. She wants to learn words like ATM and APR 🙂

    1. Totally agree, the way to bridge the gap is to connect with your audience.
So whether you are teaching kids or adults, the key is to know your audience and you can only do that through personalization and questioning.

Great public speakers do that as well, they research their audience before they go on delivering whatever they need to deliver. Add a little personalization and bingo!

As for high frequency, the language you will be offering your student is going to be high frequency because that is the nature of natural speech.

So by talking about things that interest your audience you will naturally hit your high frequency structures. High frequency structures are geographically , socially and culturally dependent.

If you are in Alaska snow is going to be high frequency whereas if you are in Hawai surfing will be . The culture, geography and culture will dictate what your high frequency structures and vocab will be.

      Great stuff we are doing!
