For those just coming in on this TPRS vs. Georgia thread, this continues the republication started in August of a series of articles I wrote five years ago when I came across on the internet something like a power point presentation created by the state of Georgia about tenets it held to be true about foreign language instruction in their state. I disagreed with many of their statements at the time and I still do – vehemently – and in these articles explain why. Now five years later I couldn’t find even find these tenets on the internet and I assume someone in Georgia called attention to how outmoded they were in terms of what ACTFL is asking for these days, but reading them at the time frankly scared me and I reacted by writing these articles and sorry for the bitchy edge in them. Our Angela Williams updated the discussion as well last month by sending us a link to the current GA standards for grades 9-12*. I republish those articles now because there is lots of activity going on down there lately and it’s not just the fall heat or the South Carolina vs. Georgia football game this weekend. I remember writing these articles. There was a feeling of confronting the teacher I had been before learning about the work of Stephen Krashen and Blaine Ray and Susan Gross and changing everything I ever thought about teaching a language. So if you are wondering about these articles, that’s what they are.
