In talking to my 4th graders today as they start their French journey, I told them that there were 3 extremely important things that they needed in French class, and one important, but less so than the others. The first three were their ears, their eyes and their brains, and the less important was their mouths. I asked why, and they nailed it. They needed to listen and watch in order to comprehend, and then they would be able to speak. They understood that babies hear language for a long time before they are able to produce. It made sense to them. Then, I hammered “My name is, is your name, his/her name is” at them for the next 15 minutes. That was it. Simple. But repetitions were there, and we had a great time. They now can see that listening comes first, input before output. What a great first day.
Thank you Ben! I needed this!!!! 🙂
Today I worked all day again on “scolds”. I got a ridiculous amount of reps, more reps (with more checking-for-understanding questions with their one word answers) than I would have ever thought would be necessary as per:

Scolds was the rebar, as per:

I thought I had a handle on this business of getting the kids to focus only on meaning, not on the words, but the new thing that I see now is that 30 or 40 reps of a target structure is just not enough. So with all the extra time in the TL I am getting by staying entirely in the language (99.9%), I am getting many many more reps and it is just working.
